Choz

16 March, 2008

box.jpg
Uncle sent over a box of assorted munchies from Choz Confectionery for his grandchild’s full month a few days ago.. Choz is endorsed by many of mediacorp’s artistes, thus i thought that I’m in for a delicious treat..

choz.jpg
Turned out to be quite a disappointment. ):

The heartshaped spongecake with jelly on top was tasteless though fragrant.

The yellow pudding jelly on eggtart’s crust was tasteless as well.. only the fruits on top were sweet.. I thought the crust would taste like butter biscuit but.. :/

The egg was.. normal.

The ang ku kueh was the best out of them all. The skin was thin and there was alot of filling. Not too sweet, you can fairly well make out the taste of mung bean. It has this homemade feel to it.. no preservatives indeed.

Sakae Teppanayaki

15 March, 2008

Treated baby at Bugis Junction’s Sakae Teppanyaki which I’ve been eyeing for a long long time.

We were seated around this big semicircle table with a family and another couple. The 2 chefs were in the center and they looked pretty warm and friendly, and also appeared to be rather stressfree when cooking~ (:

condiments.jpg
Condiments such as soy sauce, scallions, garlic and chili pepper powder were placed neatly on the table, but i think those does nothing much to the taste of the food as some people barely touched them. :p

salad.jpg
First up was the salad which looked really appealing in a small round bowl. The vegetables were crunchy and looked rather fresh, unlike those malnourished lettuce in mcdonalds’ burgers. It was unique as they don’t use white creamy sauce but instead used a sour tangy sauce which whets the appetite. Miso soup came too.

garlic.jpg
Had the chicken set and turkey set, both ‘upgraded’ to garlic rice. It’s worth it in my opinion as i find white rice rather boring. :p Topped with yummy shrimps and fried with eggs and a mountain of garlic, it was savory.. Mmm..

fishscallop.jpg
Gindara(silver cod fish) and scallops which came with the turkey set. I really love the ’sea’ taste of the scallop, it was heavenly~ so so different from those white scallops stir fried with broccoli which you find in Chinese restaurants. What i loved most was the gindara fish, real tender and had a milky taste.. I love fish! A side of random vegetables came too but i didn’t capture it.. it was basically crunchy beansprouts stirfried with onions.

salmon.jpg
Salmon and oysters for the chicken set. The salmon was average but according to baby they oyster was good, soft and tasty.. i don’t eat oysters but had a small bite.. indeed it was soft and juicy.. feels like I’m eating baby fats..

tofu-steak.jpg
Tofu steak topped with mixed veggies with sauce. Pretty normal but it was rather cute seeing the chef stir fry the few bits of veggy and placing it carefully on the rectangular block of tofu that baby thought was butter.

mushrooms.jpg
The mixed mushrooms were really really yummy! It was such a perfect blend of mushroomy goodness.. I wish they gave more of this.. it looked so photogenic that i can’t wait to eat them~

turkey.jpg
I never knew that turkey took such a short time to cook! The texture of the meat was rather inconsistent, some parts were hard and unchewable and i had to spit them out. :/ The taste was alright though, it reminded me of satay. But it’ll be much much better if they took the time to skim off the fats and tendons to improve the texture..

chicken.jpg
The chicken took a long time to cook, the cook even lit a huge fire on the chicken in front of us.. it was quite fun to watch.. but the meat was quite tough to bite even though the taste was good. Maybe the chef don’t like chicken -ike creatures’ meat. :p

egg1.jpg
Chawanmushi! This is what I’m here for. It is steamed in an onion shell and it was an interesting experience witnessing the chef putting this delicate dish together. This was the star of the show.. the egg was steamed just right, soft, slurpilicious and warmly yummy~ The prawn was really really soft and.. everything was just heavenly. (: A perfect ending to a wonderful meal.

This is just the place for me as i love variety and colours in in my food, and of course, seeing the chefs cook and wondering if what he’s cooking will end up in my plate. :p

Not forgetting the company i had, it won’t be the same if I’m eating by myself~

Ah!! And and thanks hay for the recommendation!

Baking (:

13 March, 2008

us.jpg
Cousin came over today and we baked butter cookies together.

spill.jpg
She accidentally spilled sprinkles all over the floor, some fell into the batter.. :p

us2.jpg
First batch turned out too big and colourful..

cookiestray.jpg
I topped the following batches with nuts and chocolate chips instead..

cookies.jpg
Purposely burnt it as it looks malnourished unburnt. :p Mum says it’s more crisp and frangrant too.

poke.jpg
Hmmm..

bbc.jpg
This is Hakka 黑豆糕(black bean cake) made by an old man in his ninties, who sells hakka kuehkuehs in a temple. It is made from glutinious rice, black beans, sugar and mandarin orange skin.. Traditionally, pork is added too, but it seems like this one is pork free. It comes in a rectangular block and is really dense with the black beans still intact. One eats it by cutting out a small piece and savouring it slowly.. The more you bite it, the yummier it gets. (: According to mummy, in the olden days it was more oily, more black, and it tasted much better. But the thought of pork in a sweet cake does not appeal to me. Check this out.

puff.jpg
This currypuff is bought from a really old bakery near my house which was there since i was born. It is light and has many thin flakey layers which is really crispy. The saltiness is just right and the filling was not too spicy. I guess it’s baked, since it wasn’t oily at all.

fav2.jpg
Hehe this is my favourite bread off the shelves, given to me by someone special who said ‘I bought this multigrain bread not because I don’t want to spend too much money but I feel that you will be happier eating bread compared to chocolates and flowers you dislike.’ How true~ hehe.

own1.jpg
The bread is dense and has lots of grains inside which gives it a nutty taste and smell.. and i love how i can take forever to finish a slice.. chew it slowwwwly.

toast.jpg
Can eat it toasted.. but must be really toasted sufficiently so that it taste like a biscuit.. or else it’ll be nasty.. tough to bite.

me.jpg
Life’s simple pleasure indeed. Am i too easily satisfied? :p

bachormee1.jpg
Ba chor mee at Bedok Blk 511 market which everyone raves about.. baby say it’s so-so only.. I don’t like the noodles as it tastes uncooked and bland but I really love the soup.. with all the chillis thrown in, it’s really spicy and tasty.. hmm.. shall just buy the soup with dumplings next time.

carrot.jpg
Carrot cake which is just medicore.. needs more chai po and better chilli..

dosa1.jpg
This is masala thosai from the food court at Suntec City.. Everything in that food court is very expensive. The thosai skin was yummy and really pleased my tastebuds, but it wasn’t crispy enough. The masala is nothing compared to the one I had in Little India.. it was served in too-big chunks and not spiced up enough. I love the white dip though.

bbrice1.jpg
Baby’s rice with fried chicken.. no comment. Expensive..

Prata made by Chinese~

5 March, 2008

The bliss of living in Singapore with the many ethnic groups – eating different kinds of dishes made by different people!
This prata shop is quite hard to find, make a round around Goldhill Plaza and you’ll find it in a small coffeeshop which is selling cai fan as well.

plain.jpg
I haven’t tasted such good plain prata in a well~ It has this flakey crispy outer layer and after eating your plate will have lots of these crispy burnt bits which is really yummy.. surprisely ,the plate wasn’t oily after eating~

egg.jpg
Their pratas with filling are really square and neat. Cut into squares for convenience sake, it reminds me of HK thick toast. :p We had the egg cheese mushroom prata and a chicken mutarbak. Both of them looked the same on the outside, were decent and retained a nice level of crispiness but i would say that the plain one is much more tradtional and value for money.. hehe.

I miss the Indian-ness in indian curries and eating with my hands though.. not forgetting prata with sugar.. the taste of my childhood.
