BACK FROM MALAYSIA!

16 February, 2008

First day, we made lei cha(thunder tea)! 100% home made~ For those who don’t know, lei cha is a hakka dish consisting of many different types of vegetables chopped into tiny bits and pieces, which is eaten drenched in green coloured tea(brewed from tea leaves, basil and mint).. In the olden days people ground the leaves manually and chop the nuts and veggy themselves thus producing loud noises hence the name thunder tea.

leicha.jpg
We plucked the tea leaves from a neighbour’s garden(with permission of course) ourselves and everything from the washing to grinding was done with the cooperation of the whole family~ (: The result was hot and freshly made lei cha! I ate 3 bowls of it and altogether about 6 bowls of soup. :x

Second day was spent visiting some distant relative. 4 hours of non stop chatting while i sat like like a log…. devouring cookies and 7 cups of tea. The houses in Malaysia are huge.. snapped pictures around the house. Their kid draws and his drawings were everywhere.. his grandma even made a calendar out of his drawings.. im impressed~

Last day was spent playing with the kids. The two girls are really crazy~ their sweet looks are deceiving! Hee enjoyed playing and running around though.. and drawing the whole night away. Took crazy videos as well haha!

Kway teow soup that aunt is in love with! They added fried shallot oil to the soup which makes it extra tasty and fragant!

I enjoyed my stay there.. A relaxing and peaceful life in a huge house with 2 storeys situated in a kampong like place with chickens running around and people planting their own fruit trees and vegetables.. with every house having at least a few cars.. not forgetting the good but cheap food!

Food Hunt @ Old Airport Road and more

29 January, 2008

@ Old Airport Road Food Centre:
hokkien1.jpg
Nam Sing Fried Hokkien Mee, one of the makansutra legends! Very very tasty.. they used thin beehoon instead of thick ones, just the way i like it.. the mee and beehoon absorbed all the gravy, thus it’s really yummy.. they serve it with sliced chilli instead of sambal, but it’s alright, since there’s no need for chilli at all!(but i ate all the sliced chili anyway.. haha)

prawn.jpg
Whitley Prawn Noodle with huge and fresh prawns, a flavourful broth and well cooked noodles.. it has everything you can find in a good prawn noodle soup..

porridge.jpg
Xin Mei Porridge.. thick warm… individual grains unseen.. with thin heavenly slices of fish and the century eggs that matched perfectly with the porridge.. topped with a whole stalk of youtiao..

beancurd.jpg
Beancurd’s texture was good.. taste was good.. syrup not sweet enough.. red bean too sweet and doesn’t go well with the beancurd.. Verdict: Don’t order red bean version.. haha

paper.jpg
Paper steamboat @ Genki sushi.. Light broth that’s slightly sweet from the cabbage and a slice of superb codfish.

Ministry of Food!

7 June, 2007

The Macha Zen from MOF in Marina Square is yummy! :D The shopowner(who seems to be not local) was really blur in a cute way. He gave us ice cream samples when we simply requested for a double scoop~

The green tea gelato was a nice shade of green, which looked so much more natural compared to gelare’s. It tasted a bit bitter too, and complimented the red bean paste really well~ A few may find it too sweet though, since i found it a tad sweet even with 2 scoops of gelato.. so 1 scoop may be.. umm.. sweeeeeeeeeet? Hehe.. pardon me for my lack of vocabulary~

Anyway japanese desserts are really pretty and taste yummy too~ Japanese sweet potatoes.. red beans and green tea.. yummmmm~~~~~ Hehe.. i want to really Azabu Sabo’s desserts tooooo!

Check out the mini dumplings! :D

Project: Eden

7 June, 2007

Me and sis were walking around Raffles City and chanced upon this interesting double storey exibition. It’s called ‘Project: Eden’ and is an installation art piece by Donna Ong. Basically, it’s a part of the Singapore Arts Festival~ (:

The project was really interesting as it uses things like tolietries and other stuff found in homes like hair curlers, hair clip, brooms,, etc. The colours chosen are really vibrant and vivid, and being surrounded by these made me feel like i’m in wonderland, and brings a smile to everyone. (:

Love for Bread 2005

1 April, 2007

As I took a small bite out of the slice of warm and freshly baked bread, my fond childhood memories immediately flooded through my mind. “Perfect,” I thought to myself. The comforting warmth and nostalgic aroma of the perfectly square loaf of heaven had once again brought me back to the days of my childhood.

I remember clearly the daily routine I went through every morning, about six or seven years ago when I was still a child in my primary school days. Every morning, when the hour hand of the big clock struck 6, the familiar and bright tune of ‘Mary Had A Little Lamb’ would bring me from my little dreamland back to reality, and strangely, throughout my schooling days, this unforgettable tune never failed to wake me up, no matter how long or short my sleeping hours were.

After I woke up, I would then groggily drag myself out of the comfort and coziness of my bed, manage a quick stretch, and then slowly make my way down to the kitchen, taking extreme care not to be heard by my mother, who would most likely be out in the backyard, tending to the ever pretty and cheerful bed of flowers with a smile on her equally pretty face. At this moment, I would sneakily creep up to my mother’s back and with all my might shout “Boo!” into her ears. She would always jump at this ‘unexpected greeting’ I gave her every morning, not minding it one bit but instead, laugh at her own silliness.

After our small ‘game’ to start the day, Mummy would start making breakfast. She would carefully and delicately slice two pieces of bread from the loaf she have baked the night before, treating it like the most fragile block of treasure. Each piece would be of equal thickness, and the shape of a perfect square. At this point of time, I would be sitting quietly in the oversized chair of the dining room, observing mummy’s every move carefully with eager eyes as I try very hard to absorb the moment of peace and quiet in the house.

After slicing, Mummy placed the slices of bread into the oven, toasting one side of the bread first as the lower heat of the oven was malfunctioning due to my carelessness when I tried to toast bread on my own once. I could still vaguely remember the mistake of trying to toast bread dripping with milk directly on top of the lower heating element- the unfortunate incident that banned me from future usage of the oven.

Just as the edges of the bread turn a beautiful golden brown, Mummy would remove those little treasure from the oven, letting the blissful smell of home-baked goodness escape into the room. She would then spread a rich pile of butter generously onto the slices, followed by the sprinkling of white sugar over the even layer of yellow. I would then watch, fascinated as the sugar fell like snow. Then, topping it all would be a slice of American cheese.

All this would then be sent into the oven yet again and toasted to a perfect golden brown, till the cheese melts into a wonderfully blissful pile of goo. Almost instantly, the smell of the freshly toasted goodness would send me jumping up to the oven to get it. Sinking my teeth into the toast, a sense of satisfaction plus delight never failed to wash over my face as I tasted the sinful but amazingly rich butter, and the contrast between the sweetness of the sugar and cheesiness of the cheese- A perfect breakfast to start the day.

I broke away from my reminiscing and snapped back into reality. “Sinfully good.” I muttered, satisfied as I reach out for a second slice.

Silent Night

27 December, 2006

Another one of those nights where the house feels so cold, quiet and empty.

No sounds of cooking, TV, talking or Youtube-ing.

One can only hear the monotone voice of the speaker from the radiofusion in the kitchen and the tapping on the keyboard.

Woke up to a really cold morning today, feels really comfortable under my warm blanket~

——-
Accompanied daddy to hospital for his appointment, apparantly the results aren’t so good.

Hope his condition will be under control and healthy healthy soon!

Must do my best to be a good daughter.

On a better note, there’s going to be something nice for me to watch later~

My mum doesn’t agree with celebrating birthdays, as she said that it’s a celebration of a mother’s suffering.

But it could also be celebrating how the mother managed to pull it off and bring another life on earth. Just like how one celebrate after tough exams. But we do that no matter we pass or fail..

An Only Child

19 December, 2006

Sometimes i wonder how it feels like to be an only child. It sounds so very lonely judging from what i heard from my classmates’ conversations.

It used to be me, my brother and mysister. Couldn’t remember much of those times except for the crazy late nights of anime marathons with my brother, daily suppers of biscuits or some random breads, and the laughters that pissed my mum off.

Now that my brother had gone to NS, everything felt kind of different. At first, me and mum would always look out for him from the window when he goes back to camp. I remember tearing abit during the first few weeks, feels kind of silly now. However, it seems like nothing already.

Last Friday, my sister left for a trip to Malaysia, and i get to experience the feeling of being an only child. It was kind of.. nice, having mum and dad to myself.

I know that’s selfish thinking, but that’s me. I’ve got to admit that i missed seeing the backview of my sis sitting at her computer table in her relaxed pose and watching random stuffs, it’s seriously far better than an empty room. Empty rooms seems to give off sadness(?).

Jie! Bring me to strawberry farm next time! :p

I wonder what goodies she’ll bring back tonight~
